Every night, every game, every race in every sport has the potential to be something special. It was like when Kobe Bryant scored 81 points, or when the Philadelphia Eagles upset the New England Patriots with their backup quarterback Nick Foles in last year’s Super Bowl.
Even in horse racing, there have been some phenomenal races to come out throughout the years that were instantly known to be classics.
Let’s take a look at four of the best horse races to happen in history.
Kentucky Derby of 2009
First on our list is the Kentucky Derby of 2009. This race’s hero was a horse called Mine That Bird. The race was made phenomenal by the fact that most of the race, Mine That Bird was in dead last.
However, in the final turn, who was coming down the lane with the speed of the gods behind him? It was Mine That Bird. Mine That Bird ended up winning the race by seven lengths. Records were also set this race.
The first was the biggest Derby lead win in as many as 60 years. The other was the longest-odds horse win in the Derby in almost 100 years.
This unpredictable come from behind finish is still one of the best races in horse racing history.
2015 Belmont Stakes
Next up, we have the 2015 Belmont Stakes. This is the first Belmont Stakes race in this list. In this race, the American Pharaoh ended the race by breaking the Triple Crown drought that has been in place for almost 40 years before this race.
Apart from that, American Pharaoh also broke the best time in this race, coming in at 2:26.65. This time is only behind one of the best horses ever, Secretariat. The win happened with five and a half lengths.
The race’s significance came because people didn’t think that Triple Crowns could ever be reached for anymore. American Pharaoh proved them wrong.
1978 Belmont Stakes
We have another Belmont Stakes race up right now, but this came from the year 1978. Rivalries are a healthy thing for any sport, as it serves to bring out the best in the competitors. It also makes for a good spectacle. In this specific race, it was made important by the rivalry of two horses.
The two horses were Affirmed and Alydar. Coming in to the race, Alydar was bested by Affirmed in two previous races. In this one though, Alydar took the quick lead. Affirmed caught up though and they ran the rest of the race abreast with one another.
At this point, both horses separated from the pack. It was literally a race for these two horses alone. Affirmed ended up winning by the skin of its nose.
This was one of Horse Racing Information’s favorite races.
1973 Belmont Stakes
Finally. We have the last Belmont Stakes race of this list; the 1973 Belmont Stakes. In this race, Secretariat showed why he is one of the best horses in all of history.
His win came at a 31-length gap! There was no competition to speak of. This race truly solidified him as one of horse racing’s greats.
These are only a few of the best horse races in history. As the sport continues to grow and evolve, we are excited to see what amazing races will happen next.
